Krispin’s Designer Spotlight–AElainia Stryker

AElainia Stryker

I am proud to be part of the Krispin’s family for 19 years now.  It has been interesting watching how the trends in both style and color have changed, just like the clothing industry.

Likewise to see the person I have become.  I owe so much of who I am to my time here at Krispin’s.  The friendships I have made with my co-workers both present and who have moved on are lifelong friendships.  The atmosphere here breeds talented, outgoing and honest people who are nothing short of wonderful.

“Your home is your haven – a place to relax, entertain, and express yourself. My goal is to find that unique collection for each client that serves as the focal point for their room. Then to build around those special pieces to create a room they will fall in love with.”–AElainia Stryker

AElainia w/ her husband

In my time here, my Krispin’s family has seen me through major stages of my life and has always been supportive.  I have had two beautiful girls that say they will one day work here—how cute is that? I have been re-married to a wonderful man for a year and a half.  With him came my third daughter.

The Stryker Family

When I am not putting time in at work, I am picking up after the girls, working out at the YMCA or volunteering at the girls schools.  I love having the role of mom!

I also love being a sales designer for Krispin’s.  Whether I have a blank slate or am just adding to what my client already owns.  I love the challenge and opportunity to create.  I have to admit that my favorite way of designing is to find the perfect fabric and then the frame.  I love color and patterns.  I feel as if every room should have a little bit of both.  I love to work in my client’s favorite color into a space.  My ultimate goal is to make it a relaxing environment which they will enjoy spending time in. There is nothing more gratifying than a customer telling me they couldn’t have imagined their home more beautiful!

Designing for my clients is an absolute joy to me.  I appreciate the opportunity to
have assisted so many wonderful people over the years

Aelainia is a multiple recipient of Krispin’s “Di’ Zian Award” for outstanding performance in design and customer focused service. She has been a designer with Krispin’s since 1995.

Designer Spotlight–Stephanie Etter

Stephanie Etter

“I strongly believe that everyone deserves a great interior design for their home. A great design should reflect who they are and be functional as it relates to their lifestyle. At the end of a design project I want my clients to say, “I never knew my home could look and feel this great!”

I have been an Interior Designer with Krispin’s for almost 7 years now.  I started at Krispin’s right after graduating from Sinclair with my Associates in Applied Interior Design.  I was so excited to take projects from the developmental stage to completion and see how happy my clients were with their new space.  I have always been partial to contemporary furnishings and consider myself very blessed to be able to work with wonderful people and beautiful furniture every day.  I am also a member of D.S.I.D. which is the Dayton Society of Interior Designers, who work together to help keep business local.

My favorite aspect of design is definitely color.  I find it sad that so many people today are afraid of color.

Color is the fastest way to change the way a space feels in no time at all.

Stephanie used color to bring energy and life to this open floor plan.

I have wanted to be an Interior Designer for as long as I can remember.  My poor father would help me rearrange my bedroom furniture every other weekend because I would want to try something different.  When I was in 8th grade I job shadowed an Interior Designer, Sharon Bledsoe, who strongly suggested I learn how to draw.  Even stick figures and I do not get along when it comes to drawing, so I looked into other career options.  But ultimately I still came back to design.  I still can not draw with a pencil, but now I do all the drawings for the store, but on a computer!  As Sharon is a member of D.S.I.D. she has now become one of my mentors!

In what free time I have, I tend to stay pretty busy.  While putting myself through design school, I followed in my father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and I became an EMT and joined a fire department.  I continue to work with the City of Vandalia: Division of Fire whenever I can.  If I am not at Krispin’s or the fire house, I am usually with my wonderful boyfriend.  In the past year and a half I have been lucky enough to meet an amazing man who I plan on keeping for a long time.  We are in the process of trying to sell his house now, so if anyone wants to move to the Greenville area, let me know!!

Starting this past July, I also took on an additional role at Krispin’s of being the Sales Designer Coach.  I am also the Auto Cad Technician for our design team and assist the other Interior Designers in any way that I can.

I look forward to what the future holds for not only me but Krispin’s as well.

Krispin’s Designers Decorate Their Christmas Tree

The entire staff at Krispin’s enjoy a unique relationship in that we all have genuine love and respect for one another.  This natural connection makes ”team building” almost unnecessary; however, we do take time to participate in special events throughout the year. And what a wonderful time to take out time to share a special moment with those you care about than the holiday season. This year we choose to decorate a Christmas tree for the gallery and continued our Food Bank drive from last year.

When it comes to design none of our designer team members were short on ideas.  Heading up the project was designer, Erica Robinson, along with input from the rest of the designers and staff.  Krispin’s has a unique elegant contemporary brand; therefore, it was imperative the ornamentation and decor coordinated with the store’s showroom design. The tree is layered with the natural silver and champagne gold Krispin’s is known for but with a touch of black for dramatic affects.  Smaller reflective bulbs were used on the inner limbs for depth and of course reflection.  The tree topper is a beautiful gold bow accented with glittered “ting-tings”.  The color, texture and scale variations make for a spectacular tree.

We enjoyed decorating the tree and listening to Christmas music.  It solidified even further our connection and allowed us to share in a timeless tradition.

The staff at Krispin’s would like to wish you and your family and loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Non-Traditional Thanksgiving–by Erica Robinson

A Non-Traditional Thanksgiving

Have you ever considered something different as your main entrée for your Thanksgiving meal? Or if you are like me and not a fan of turkey, have you ever entertained the idea of making a dish that you may favor more? Well, maybe this year, it’s time that we start mixing things up.

If you dare to step outside the box and also save some time, how about a good classic dish like a homemade Chicken Noodle Casserole? It’s still an all-American dish and will even warm up your belly while you enjoy your holiday afternoon football games. Or Barbeque Ribs, now that is a finger-licking good idea. You can still pair it up with your favorite mashed potatoes and homemade, cheesy macaroni recipes. And if you just don’t have the time or energy to prep and cook the turkey, how about slow cooking a Roast Beef in a Crockpot. Again, paired up with your mashed potatoes and gravy, you will have created a yummy hotshot!

The side dishes, well, sides can be anything and everything.  You can’t go wrong with a delicious garnish to your main entrée, not to mention, the more the merrier!  Maybe try and introduce a scrumptious Coleslaw or a 7 layer salad this year, or substitute that green bean casserole for a Cheesy Mushroom and Broccoli Casserole dish.

Now for the best part…. DESSERT! How about an indulgent Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing. Mmm .. my mouth is already watering. And Texas Sheet Cake?  You tend to see more fruit pies and cobblers on the table, why oh why, have we left out the chocolate?!?

If you are considering an alternative experience for your entire Thanksgiving meal, try a Fondue. Sure it may take some prep time but once that is done, you will have loads of time to enjoy each other while you “fondue” your meat, potatoes and dessert!

I wish everyone a wonderfully blessed Thanksgiving! Take time to reflect on what is good in life and be sure to count your blessings, no matter how big or small!

Fall Fashion for 2011: by Krispin’s Designer Candis Lindsey

The sun has tamed its rays and the kids are back in school. What does that mean….that fall is here! It’s time to stow away the flip flops and the swimming gear and adorn your closet with these fun new fall fashions. But be warned, Bold is in!

-When you mention velvet, many think of their grandmother’s sofa but new life has been given to the luxurious fabric. Velvet tailored jackets, vests, pants, and even shoes will be lining the racks this fall in deep rich colors like burgundy and midnight blue. Pair it with a lightweight, delicate fabric for a great ensemble.

Power of Texture--Velvet Trend

-Gowns and cocktail attire are the known formal wear for women, but not this season! Menswear-inspired suits and separates’ with tuxedo detailing will be seen not only in the workplace, but in a formal setting as well.

Twist on all things formal

-         One strong trend that continues to thrive into fall is the pencil skirt. Not only do they shape the body well, but it also has the versatility to be dressed up for your daytime job, and spiced up for a girl’s night out with just a change of accessories. Pair it with a satin, silk, or embellished top and maybe even a belt to accentuate the waist.

Professional by day--Pencil SkirtSexy by night

-         We can’t ignore the daring trend of color blocking! The key to using this technique appropriately is to join up one neon or bright color, one bold color, and one neutral color. Even using different hues of the same color will do the trick! Here are a few suggestions to get you started!

  • Sky blue, Cobalt, and Navy
  • Coral, Grey, and Ivory
  • Purple, Ivory, and teal

Color Anyone?

- The 70’s style has come full circle once again! Flare and Wide-leg jeans, faux fur vests, tops, boots, and accessories, and even the use of large geometrical and small floral prints.

Safety Tips for Trick or Treat–Stephanie Etter

Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

I am an Interior Designer at Krispin’s but when I am not designing I wear a second hat; I am a volunteer for a local fire department. Safety is always important, but as we approach Halloween, it needs to be one of our first thoughts as we work on costume designs for all the little ghosts and goblins. The number one rule for Halloween should not need mentioned, but I will anyways just for fun…Children of all ages should be escorted by an adult at all times!!! We teach our children not to take candy from strangers, yet this night is dedicated to it. Adults need to be present to ensure all goes well. Also have the route you plan on trick-or-treating mapped out and check the local and state websites for registered sex offenders and make sure your kids do not go near those addresses. You will be surprised how many may be living very near you.

Now, moving onto something more fun…the costume design!! If your child is going to be wearing mask or any kind of hat/headpiece always make sure they can see out of it completely. They need to be able to see down, for curbs and cracked sidewalks, as well as left to right for street crossings and safety in general. For costumes that are mostly dark colored, it is imperative that the costume also have something on it to reflect light or something to make the child stand out in the dark.

Many people have started using glow sticks of one form or another that the child can wear as a necklace or bracelet. You can also buy reflective tape and place it on the costume or even on the bag that is being used to gather all the wonderful “treats”. Since Ohio’s weather is always up in the air around the time of Halloween, remember that if coats are added over costumes to make sure the reflective aspect of the costume is still visible. Also all costumes need to be flame retardant and for home made costumes you can buy a fire retardant spray to apply. For all the witches carrying brooms or perhaps grim reapers carrying the mandatory machete, make sure all props are made of flexible foam or plastic. The prop should be designed to bend if the child was to fall onto it.

Children of all ages should be escorted by an adult at all times!!!

The one thing that might be even more important to children than the costume is what kind of bag they will use to carry their spoils. When it comes to selecting what kind of bag your child will carry, consider a few things. First, when the child is carrying the bag it should not drag the ground. This is often a problem with children who use pillowcases as their bag. As they become heavier they will drag even more creating a hazard for not only the child but also other children to trip over. Secondly, for younger children often having a small bag, like a plastic pumpkin or reflective trick-or-treat bag may be best. When the small bag gets full it can be emptied into a larger bag carried by the adult who is escorting the child.

Many people have started using glow sticks of one form or another that the child can wear as a necklace or bracelet

After a full night of trick-or-treating has come to an end, parents need to inspect ALL the spoils of the evening. Any candy that may be slightly unwrapped should be eliminated and thrown out. If the child is very young, consider the types of remaining candy. Things like caramel and hard candies can be choking hazards. Other choking hazards can be small plastic toys, like the spider rings or wax lips, which are sometimes handed out in place of candy. For some parents who may not be comfortable allowing their children to eat the candy even after they have inspected it there may be another option. In the past some area police departments have X-rayed Halloween candy free of charge. So depending upon where you live there may be an agency nearby who offers this.

Have a Happy & Safe Fall

Jim Shaffer

The ultimate goal of Halloween is for children to have fun and for the night to end with everyone going home safely.

Happy Trick-or-Treating!!!

Designer Spotlight–Erica Robinson

Erica Robinson

Krispin’s is proud to spotlight Design Team Member, Erica Robinson.  Erica has been a part of Krispin’s for over 10 years.  You can see more of Erica’s work in our Before & After section.

Krispin's Design Staff Team Member--Erica Robinson

This year is a special mile marker for me as I will be celebrating my 10th year designing for Krispin’s.  Krispin’s has been a world of blessings from  beginning to end and I thank God each day that he put Krispin’s in my life.

I graduated with a degree in Visual Communications in June 2001 and started designing with Krispin’s a few months later in August.  Even though I learned the design basics in school, I strongly believe that I am the designer I am today because of the extensive training and continuous education classes I’ve received through Krispin’s, not to mention the hands-on experience I’ve gained working with my clients.

When I come in each day, I don’t view my job as work, it’s like a designer’s playground and I get to let my creative juices run free.  And at the end of the day, its utter bliss to see what was once a dream become reality.

“I thank God each day that he put Krispin’s in my life.”

I also have been a proud ESOP owner and a multiple recipient of Krispin’s Di’Zian award since 2001.  This award is presented in recognition of a designer’s performance both as a designer and as a sales person.  When a customer comes in to our showroom, it is my goal to make them feel welcomed and at home.

To be a customer-focused designer, I believe it is important to discover the customer’s actual needs and not just give the customer what they are asking for.  It is possible that what they are asking for is what they need, but most often, the size, color or shape is not right.  I consider myself to be more than just a sales consultant, I am your friend and you can trust that I have every desire to fulfill your dreams and make it more beautiful than you could have ever imagined.

“When I come in each day, I don’t view my job as work, it’s like a designer’s playground and I get to let my creative juices run free.  And at the end of the day, its utter bliss to see what was once a dream become reality.”

Every designer has their strengths and mine is rendering floor plan designs.  I feel that it is worth putting in the extra time and energy for my clients to have a concise depiction of what the final product will look like and my design renderings portray more than just traffic patterns, they clearly show the design elements and principles, color, shape, size, balance and harmony.   In addition to my own design projects, I offer assistance to the other designers by drawing their floor plan designs on our Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software program.

“I feel blessed to be surrounded with Christian filled individuals, who value and respect each other and give true  meaning to the word TEAM!”
And when it comes to Krispin’s Company Events, I have been dubbed the CMO (Chief Morale Officer) of Krispin’s.
I believe it is  important to maintain a healthy relationship with our fellow co-workers.  Over the years, I have taken the initiative in planning and coordinating events such as our Dayton Dragon’s game this past Spring, the 2010 Tom’s Corn Maze and past Company Picnic’s in the Park.  I feel blessed to be surrounded with Christian filled individuals, who value and respect each other and give true  meaning to the word TEAM!

“When I come in each day, I don’t view my job as work, it’s like a designer’s playground and I get to let my creative juices run free.  And at the end of the day, its utter bliss to see what was once a dream become reality.”

I currently live in North Dayton with my husband of 4 years and we are proud parents of four furry friends.  We have yet to be blessed with children, but we are confident it will happen soon. However, right now, we feel that God is teaching us patience and love as we are learning to take care of our two very active and mischievous puppies.  I also take joy in my 8 nieces and  nephews.  I love spoiling and rallying them up and then sending them home with their parents.  I am sure I will get paid back later in life  when we have our own.

Erica & her husband Aaron

“Spending time with my husband and my family is of utmost  importance to me.  My husband and I enjoy  baseball and even participate in a summer co-ed softball league.  We also enjoy traveling and watching movies  at our local drive-in theater.”

Erica enjoying family & charitable events

We are  long time members of our church, Christian Life Center of Dayton and this fall,  we have been called into a ministry position and will be young co-leaders of a  “Marriage for a Lifetime” class.  I also  volunteer a few times a month with CLC’s Compassion 1st ministry, sorting and organizing donated items.

Erica & Aaron

Like I said before, I am blessed.  Who else could ask for a more well-rounded  life; and working for a successful, Christian owned company is just the cherry  on top. For those reading this that I have had the privilege to work with over  the years, thank you for making my years with Krispin’s so successful and  allowing me to let my creative juices flow.  And for those who are still to come, I look forward to meeting you and starting  our future relationship as your trusted friend and designer!

Enjoy Your Own Outdoor Space: The Value of Outdoor Furniture

Whether for an intimate evening or a relaxing night with family...this Firepit Set would definitely set the mood!

It is no secret; prices on our everyday needs have risen, on everything from groceries to gas. Not to mention the increase in fees for flights and hotel stays. This trend has triggered the start of yet another trend, “Staycations”! We all have heard the term but have you considered its full value? “Staycation” is a one word simplification of the merit behind enjoying the full potential of your property! Think of all the memories you have made within the walls of your home, have you thought on the memories that could be made outside of those walls! Expand your home to the outdoors!

So many families forget to utilize the outside area that is in fact a part of your home. If it’s not in use, it’s similar to paying a monthly fee on a room that sits empty with the door closed. More and more, we have seen families starting to make their outdoor spaces into another part of their home to enjoy! Whether it’s for your personal time, where you consume your morning coffee, where you eat dinner with family, or enjoy an evening with friends, that space is one with much potential and value!

Indulge at dinner, laugh during drinks, or start a winning streak while playing cards. No matter what, memories are made around a table!

Krispin’s for many years has been known for our genuine care for the look and feeling our customers get in their homes after working with us. We feel no different about that extra part of your home that too often gets neglected. That is why this year we decided to expand our inventory to Contemporary Outdoor Furniture! From fire pits to sectionals, bars to bistro tables, we have brought in such a wide array of outdoor furniture to help our customers to enjoy their view of nature in the most functional and beautiful of ways.Upon selecting our outdoor lines, we made certain that we knew the quality and comfort would be just what our customers would expect from us…excellent!

Just as we believe furnishings for your home should be an investment that you should take pleasure in for many, many years, we think the same of your outdoor sanctuary. Our outdoor pieces are constructed and protected in a way that ensures its longevity and comfort. Even down to the fabric cushions, which are created to withstand the harsh sun and rain, and even mildew and mold. This being said, we are very excited to be carrying such uniquely designed and greatly constructed pieces to enhance your outdoor paradise!

Take pride in your home, inside and out and enjoy all that it has to offer. Come in and see our new Contemporary Outdoor Collection and see if we can inspire you to take a “Staycation” this summer!

Designing My Wedding–Krispin’s Designer Candis Lindsey counting down the days!

April  is almost over! It is hard to believe that in a few weeks, I will be marrying my best friend! We are so excited for what is to come! In the midst of all the wedding planning and such, there is one thing that we have truly been blessed by and something I highly suggest, and that is marriage counseling! So many people think of counseling as a way to solve problems that arise, but it is much more than that! We have found that it fills your tool belt with the tools you need before building a house. It does no good to start building a structure if you have no tools to do it with! So in a way, it is a way to prevent, and to prepare you, since we all know life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies! We have not only learned more about the wants and needs of one another, but we have also learned about ourselves as well. So much I could say about this experience, and what a blessing it has been to us! We definitely recommend that all couples who are planning to wed go through counseling classes; it will be well worth your time!

On another note, the plans are coming right along! My bridesmaids have ordered their dresses and have already received them! They all picked out the exact same dress and each one of them looks beautiful in it! However, my maid of honor wanted hers to be different and I didn’t mind. The invitations were mailed out a long time ago and it has since been so exciting to go home to see RSVP’s that have arrived in the mail. In all of the things in the planning process to get wrapped up in, I try to daily make it my goal just to focus on the joy that each day brings with it! It can be stressful to plan such a beautiful event, but the key to remember, it is not your wedding day that is going to matter so much, yet the commitment you make and the days to follow that will mean everything! And that is what I am most excited for!

I have been blessed with two bridal showers and I cried my eyes out after the first one with my family and friends.  The ladies here at Krispin’s gave me a shower as well at Cheesecake Factory last Saturday evening and we all had a wonderful time.  I am so greatful for all of the love and support we have been receiving from our family and friends.  I think this is very important when planning for this special time in your life.  Surround yourself with those who love you and are happy for you!

If you are have been planning your wedding or have thoughts about counseling, wedding dresses or would like to share photos from your bridal shower we would love to here from you.  Please leave us a comment!

Krispin’s– More Than a Store–33rd Anniversary Celebration

       Krispin’s Celebrates!

Krispin’s– More Than a Store–33rd Anniversary Celebration

Owners and staff members reflect on the store’s wonderful history!

“At Krispin’s we are constantly learning and growing.  Every day we give it our best and then the next day we try to do it a little bit better.”—Dan Grubb

Even on the outward Krispin’s does not look like your ordinary store.  When you enter into the gallery the atmosphere seems magical.  And honestly, it is! Over the years Krispin’s has made many home owners wishes come true by assisting them with the home design of their dreams.

Now in its 33rd year, Krispin’s has managed to maintain true to their philosophy. Which is quality customer focused service and caring about every member of the Krispin’s team. Krispin’s not only values every customer but every member of their staff.  Extending this sense of value across the board has made Krispin’s a success!  Long before “branding” was the topic of the many how to seminars across the country Krispin’s had developed and mastered this concept.

Although known for its contemporary style and award winning showroom, the real story is inside behind the scenes—the heart of Krispin’s.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dan and Becky Grubb the founders and ESOP trustees of Krispin’s in hopes of conveying the sentiment of Krispin’s and just how spectacular it is.

“I love what I do!! If the heart of our business is our employees then the soul of our business is our customers.”—Becky Grubb

As a designer, I would have to say Krispin’s is a well-designed organization.   First, what is the core philosophy of Krispin’s? What is at its center?

Dan:

Nothing complex, really just quite simple!  At Krispin’s we are constantly learning and growing.  Every day we give it our best and then the next day we try to do it a little bit better.  Everyday a little bit better than the day before.

Becky:

Yes, it simple. Our philosophy is centered on love.  Love for our customers and love for our fellow employees.  As an employee owned company we are committed to teamwork and professionalism.  We believe this dedication is essential to achieving the high standards of excellence to which we aspire.

In today’s average work environment Krispin’s sounds too good to be true. Was this concept something you set out to establish and develop or did it just happen?

Dan:

No deep concepts here.  We are just regular people—working hard—doing the very best we can.  We learn by doing.  We put in long hard days and keep our ears to the ground.

Becky:

The concept actually just happened.  Starting out you realize that you need to work hard and work smart.  As we “found our way”, we realized how much we loved what we were doing.  Finding success for us was founded by really caring for both our customer and our employees.  Caring strengthened our dedication to what we were trying to achieve.

Being a part of Krispin’s team I can honestly say I can see how this happened.  I consider myself as one who arrived late to the party but glad she was invited and came along for the ride.

I oftentimes hear customers say purchasing furniture from Krispin’s is an experience.  There’s a lot of work which goes into building a store.  Does it feel like work or has it ever felt like work?

Dan:

Pam, if you do a quick look in the dictionary for definitions of “Work” vs. “Play”—the difference is the fun.  Work is labor—play is fun! I’ve been doing this for 41 years and it’s been a blast.  Every single day has been fun.  It’s been hard work but it’s always fun.

Becky:

I love what I do!! If the heart of our business is our employees then the soul of our business is our customers. Our passion for creating beautiful interiors helps us to form long term relationships with our customers.  Building relationships takes effort but it doesn’t feel like work. I would second what Dan said, “It’s always been fun!”

Krispin’s is known for it’s Award Winning Showroom

Many people may not be familiar with ESOP but unlike a traditional 401K plan or most retirement plans in which the employer matches what the employee contributes Krispin’s actually gives each ESOP member a share of the profits without any contribution required.  Awesome!

I believe this speaks volumes about the heart of this company.  It looks like just a furniture store but it’s not.  And aside from the excellent training and hands on mentoring each designer receives, it’s amazing how each of you take the time to show interest in the team members lives.  How important is this concern for each individual to you and the success of Krispin’s?

Dan:

Becky would agree we all spend a large part of our life together here at Krispin’s.  And thank God—we have a lot of love and a lot of respect for each other.  It truly is a family.  It’s not unusual for people who have been gone for years to send Christmas cards or even stop back in for a visit.  It is love—Krispin’s is a family.

Becky:

As I said earlier the HEART of our business is our employees.  Each team member is of utmost importance to Krispin’s success as a business and to us as a part of our Krispin’s family.  Dan and I agree– we are blessed to have such as amazing group of co-workers…,

Tell me about deciding to become employee owned.  It is rare in today’s market.  How did this come about?

Dan:

Honestly, the ESOP warms my heart.  Becky and I have poured our life into Krispin’s.  And it’s no secret—we are near retirement.  But we love Krispin’s and it is our heart that Krispin’s would continue onward and upward without us.  It would be sad to close Krispin’s just because Becky and I want to retire.  And I shudder to think of what would happen if we sold Krispin’s to someone else—an outsider.  And truly there is no one more deserving and more capable to perpetuate Krispin’s than the employees who have likewise poured their hearts and souls into the success of Krispin’s.  So ESOP is a win/win!

Becky:

We are proud to say we have been an ESOP company since 2001.  Sharing in the growth and success of Krispin’s along with our family of employees. Adding to what Dan stated, this is our way of showing each individual just how important they are to Krispin’s and to us personally.

I have heard stories about you both working long hours working on the showroom and essentially building Krispin’s.  And I have witnessed the both of you work tirelessly still.  How do you think this has contributed to the overall loyalty your team members have to Krispin’s?

Dan:

Now you’ve hit on something there.  There are no free lunches in this world.  There is no substitute for hard work.  What I love is finding someone that wants to work hard, giving them an opportunity and watching them become rewarded.  I’ve always enjoyed working hard.  The work was not hard—the work is easy, but I’m talking about working hard at it, being committed to what I was doing.  And yes, we all need good leaders.  Not someone that tells us to go do it.  But someone that says—follows me—this is how you succeed.

Becky:

Again, I agree with Dan we have done the jobs we are now asking them to do; therefore, it is easier to relate to them since we have walked in their shoes.  I sincerely believe you must be committed to whatever you are doing to do it well.  And over the years our family of employees has seen us working along with them to make Krispin’s the success it is and what we knew it could be.

Thank you for agreeing to this interview.  I know you have always desired to maintain behind the scenes.  Is there anything else you would like to add that I did not ask you about but you wanted to make sure our customers knew?

Dan:

I know I’m prejudice—but I still got to say how great Krispin’s truly is.  There is no better place to buy furniture and accessories.  Krispin’s is not this building!  Krispin’s is people! Good people, working hard to please and win the patronage of our customers.  And I believe with all my heart we give our customers more for their dollar than anybody.  It is a joy to look back and see the happiness we have given to our Krispin’s customers.  And is a blessing to enjoy their repeated visits and patronage to Krispin’s.

Becky:

And I would add how thankful we are for both our customers and employees.  Without either we would not be where we are today.  One of the most gratifying things we have experienced over the years is the longtime loyalty of both customers and employees.

A Long Road Filled with Success—and still going!

In 1976 St RT 725 was a two lane road all the way from the Dayton mall to Centerville.  In 1976 Dan Grubb and two other partners formed a partnership, purchased the property and built a shopping center called the Home Center.  The concept was a one stop shopping center that was exclusively devoted to products and services for your home.  The original design included an interior walk way so the shoppers could pass from one store to the next without going outside.  The Home center had a grand opening in June of 1978.

The original merchants consisted of:

Country Kitchen Restaurant, Bed and Bath Shoppe, Home Center Fire Place Store, Tibbett’s Hardware, Ortman’s Carpet, Home Center Furniture, Rex TV & Appliances, Home Center Hut Tubs, Home Center Pots & Pans

The concept was anything and everything for your home.  Home Center Furniture, which is now Krispin’s Furniture, was the anchor tenant.

Krispin’s Time Line

  •   In 1978 Jimmy Carter was President, Star Wars was the summer block buster movie and in June Home Center Furniture, Inc. opened its doors.  Home Center Furniture was a full line, full service, medium priced furniture store representing all styles (traditional, early American and contemporary).  The showroom was setup as a showcase store with interior walls forming 78 fully accessorized room displays.

  • With the popularity of designer jeans, shoulder pads and television iconic shows like Dallas and Dynasty, in 1984 Home Center Furniture recognized the stronger trend of contemporary styles.  After much deliberation decided to specialize in contemporary furnishings.  The store was renamed Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture.  Krispin’s began to develop its talents and resources as a specialist in contemporary furniture.

  • In 1986 as Oprah Winfrey hit the airways, Dan Grubb was elected to the Board of Directors of the Ohio Chapter of the NHFA.  The Ohio board consists of approximately 20 of the leading furniture retailers in the state.  The purpose of this organization is to provide better communications and unity of the furniture industry on a state level.  By being on this board, Krispin’s has developed many friendly relations with other retailers in the state.

  • In August of 1987 with the insurgence and popularity of technology Krispin’s began to computerize its inventory.  In April 1989 bar codes were added to the system by Daniel D. Grubb.  As of May 1990, Krispin’s was proud to have one of the leading furniture inventory systems in the world.  This system provides reports that enable us to watch, measure, analyze and efficiently use our inventory.

  • In 1987 everyone around the world was looking for more ways to become competitive and become a force in whatever business they were established in.  Pop culture was at its peak. And in October of this year Krispin’s was invited to join the Contemporary Design Group, headquartered in San Diego.  The Contemporary Design Group provides Krispin’s with professional advertising via direct mail and television.  The group is a buying group which provides exclusive purchases to its members.  The members are geographically spread throughout the United States.  The concept is to provide invaluable networking opportunities among group members.

  • In 1988 while everyone was humming “Groovy Kind of Love”, Jim Shaffer was working hard to establish Krispin’s warehouse team as the dependable force it is known for.  He was honored in June 1988 as warehouse manager of the year for the state of Ohio.  A prestigious and well deserved honor.

  • In 1990 the Cincinnati Reds swept the Oakland A’s in the World Series and Krispin’s was selected Retailer of the Year, winning the first annual arts award.  This prestigious honor was awarded for excellence in design presentation of the retail showroom.  The award was received by Becky Grubb at the First Arts Award Banquet in Dallas, Texas.

  • And in 1991 as Masahiro Koishikawa discovered the Asteroid 6859, Krispin’s discovered the customer focused training techniques of Tobler Consulting Group and implemented a specialized approach to selling home furnishings.  Through extensive training, Krispin’s management and sales team began this invaluable method of focusing on the customers’ total home furnishing needs and developed a “master plan” for the client’s home interior design.

  • In 1999 Kevin Spacey received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Tim Payne and Jeremy Smith were honored by Sugarcreek Township in August for their acts of bravery in assisting the police with a car accident victim on their route to a delivery.

  • In 2001 George Bush was President and we were saddened by the tragedy of the events which took place in New York City and in our Nation’s capital; however, we were touched and forever changed by the outpouring of American’s throughout our country.  Just days before after years of praying and even seeking the advice of their pastor Dan and Becky Grubb made the profound decision to close Krispin’s on Sunday’s.  This sacrifice they knew would have a dramatic impact on their income as Sunday’s were profitable for them.  But not just thinking from a business prospective but considering their faith and their employees they decided the benefit it would add to their lives as well as their staff. Therefore, they decided to close Sunday’s and also change their hours to close earlier in the evening.  During this time Krispin’s made another pivotal decision and began its Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The ESOP is operated as a tax exempt Trust.  The purpose of the ESOP is to enable employees to acquire beneficial ownership in Krispin’s stock without having to invest their own money serving as a retirement plan Krispin’s employees.

  • As HGTV continued to grow, Krispin’s ventured into the local arena of those seeking to improve their home environment by in 2010 participating in the Dayton Home & Garden show held at the Convention Center.  In December 2010 members of Krispin’s design staff were featured guest on WHIO radio broadcast to discuss the benefit of home staging.

  • Presently, Krispin’s has entered into the internet world by updating their website.  With a well-designed user friendly website complete with designer showcase, clearance, blogs  and video sections Krispin’s is now able to better interact with their customers and allow them to have a view of some of the wonderful selections available.  Packed with information the website became an instant success.  Krispin’s has even ventured out and joined Facebook!  Recognizing this new form of marketing, (as with any other major events that has shaped our culture as well as Krispin’s) Krispin’s does not intend on being left behind; but has become a leader in this area as well.

The Krispin’s Team 2011

Vicki Wison--Buyer, Manager

My husband and I fell in love with Krispin’s in the early eighties when we first discovered it hidden away in the Home Center shopping center.   I jokingly told Becky that I would have to get a job here to pay for everything I had fallen in love with for my home.  She said that could be arranged and the next thing I knew I was working for Krispin’s.  It was an exciting experience for me.  I had always worked for a large company in an office so the vibe was totally different.  It was fun to be here and see all the new design trends and help the customers (who quickly became friends) fulfill their dreams for their homes.  Needless to say, all my paychecks were happily spent at Krispin’s and our home is filled with beautiful pieces that we cherish.

Due to personal circumstances, I had to leave after seven years but Krispin’s was never out of my heart.  In 2006 when I found myself looking for work, Dan and Becky welcomed me back with open arms.  Although the economy has presented obstacles, the last five years back at Krispin’s has been very exciting.  I have been learning how to buy, merchandise and display all our beautiful furniture and accessories.  Each day I look forward to coming to Krispin’s for a new challenge.  You never know who you will meet or what the day will bring but it is always interesting.  I thank God each day for my job at Krispin’s and most of all for the relationships I have developed with my co-workers and our wonderful customers.

In this economy, small business owners are truly struggling to stay in business because of the big box stores but I believe in this day and age, small businesses need to be nurtured and keep vibrant.  A world without the smaller unique, extraordinary stores like Krispin’s would be truly boring and ordinary.    I do hope the consumers understand this and embrace the small unique stores in their neighborhoods.

Jay Warrick--Office Manager

I consider myself blessed to be a part of a group of people in a company that truly care about what we do–and how we do it!  Over the years I have seen us consistently go to great lengths to make sure our customers are happy and thankful that they put their trust in us.  I feel like that is a rare thing!

Jay Warrick

Office Manager

Jim Shaffer--Warehouse Manager

The year was 1978.  I saw a challenge to be a part of beginning a great furniture store.  I knew this would be a wonderful opportunity for Shaffer Movers, my trucking company.   The location was right, the time was right, and Dan Grubb, the person to lead the way, was right.  So I joined the party!  The challenges have been rewarding and satisfying and the people I have worked with are all dedicated, wonderful people!

Tim Payne--Delivery Specialist

My name is Tim, and I deliver for Krispin’s.  I have been here since 1996.  I take pride in providing a service for our customers, knowing that they will likely come to our store again.  Krispin’s has been a steady job that has provided for my family and I.  And at the same time, giving me a second family to care for.    Thank you Krispin’s.

Mike Gessman--Delivery Specialist

Hi, my name is Mike.  I have been a part of the Krispin’s team since 1984.  I have seen and delivered every trend and style of furniture you can imagine.  I enjoy what I do and love the people I work with.  I still get that “new car smell” sensation everytime I walk in the door.

Connie Tschantz--Senior Designer

Krispins Contemporary has been an incredible company to be part of since I began my career here in March 1989!  Our business model has been to always put the needs of our customer first, give every project our very best effort and produce design projects to enhance the quality of life of the families we serve!  In doing so, we have truly established lifelong relationships with our clients and fellow team members!

I am honored and thankful to work with Dan and Becky, our fearless founders, who believe in doing everything with excellence and integrity and particularly with Jim Shaffer, my father!  He is our trucking contractor, Warehouse Manager and Customer Service Manager!  My father is honestly the kindest and most selfless man I know!  I am inspired everyday by the fabulous team members at Krispins who are so talented and professional.  What a blessing to know them all.

Finally, and most important, I want to God for his plan for me.  He led me right to Krispins where19 years ago I waited on a young engineer who needed a desk. A year later my dreams came true and Jim and I were married!   Jessica, our 11 year old daughter, would make an amazing designer!  Maybe we’ll have a third generation here one day!

AElainia Stryker--Senior Designer

I still remember the day I saw the add in the paper that Krispin’s was hiring.  Wow, Krispin’s, what a great place.  Before I even interviewed I felt it would be a place I could settle into.  Did I ever underestimate that thought.  Over 18 years later I could not imagine myself anywhere else.  Krispin’s truly is my second family.  I could have never known just how much it would have become part of my life.  I have grown into the person that I am proud to say is AElainia partly because of the connections made here.  Sure, the co workers and management are out of this world but I can’t leave out my clients.  Over the years I have met some special people that when I see outside of our doors, I still have to hug and get caught up.

I have been truly blessed to be a part of this team.  I wish everyone could know the joy that we feel.  Thank you to everyone that has made over half of my life a fun yet very rewarding journey.

AElainia Stryker

Erica Robinson--Interior Designer

This year is also a special year for me as I will be celebrating my 10th year designing for Krispin’s.  Krispin’s has been a world of blessings for me.  My first blessing started with Krispin’s hiring me shortly after I graduated with a design degree in 2001.  And I give Krispin’s full credit for the designer I have become.  I am who I am today because of the extensive training and continuous education classes I’ve received thru Krispin’s, as well as the hands-on experience I’ve gained working with my clients.  I truly feel that my job is not just work, it’s a passion to make my client’s dreams a reality.

I also feel blessed to be surrounded with Christian filled individuals, who value and respect each other and give true meaning to the word TEAM!  We are a proud, hardworking sales TEAM, management TEAM, and delivery TEAM!  But more importantly, we are a proud, hardworking Krispin’s TEAM!

Stephanie Etter--Interior Designer

From my first day at Krispin’s, almost 6 years ago now, I was immediately accepted into the Krispin’s family–and it’s a good family! I have been able to grow not only as a designer but as a person as well.  I have been given the opportunities that a designer just starting out can only dream about.  As a result, I have had the priviledge to design in some of Miami Valley’s most beautiful and amazingly designed homes.  I could never have found a better place to start and grow!

Stephanie Etter–Interior Designer

Candis Lindsey--Interior Designer

As one of the newer employee’s here at Krispin’s, I have been blessed to work for a company that has been built on such high standards and wonderful principles! Working as a part of this unique team has not only allowed me to grow professionally, but as a person as well.  I have never before worked in such an uplifting envirnoment.  I don’t think I could have asked for more!

Candis Lindsey–Interior Designer

Pamela Cone--Interior Designer

When I noticed the advertisement for an available position at Krispin’s one evening I immediately researched the store. Not being a native of Dayton I wasn’t familiar with Krispin’s rich history.  That night I could barely sleep!  I must have thought someone was going to apply and get hired in the middle of the night.  The next morning with my portfolio in hand I was at Krispin’s door when they opened.  When I walked into the entry way I made an affirmation and said to myself, “I want my photo to be on that wall as one of their designers”.  And when I entered the store I was amazed! It was beyond beautiful.

Everyday since I became a member of Krispin’s team I can honestly say I have grown as a designer and as a person.  Each day is new and exciting and I look forward to giving my best to every client I am blessed to meet.  The hands on mentoring I have received is priceless.  The opportunity to design for the best customers throughout the Miami Valley area continues to be a blessing. It’s wonderful to work in an atmosphere in which your accomplishments are noticed and rewarded.  I do not apologize for boasting about Krispin’s we are simply the best!

Connie w/ her husband & daughter

First, I would like to thank God for the beautiful life he has given me.  Everyday I am very aware how blessed I am to have a wonderful husband, a precious daughter and a loving, close family to share my life!   My life is peaceful because of my relationship with my Heavenly Father and the mercy He offers each day.

I am a native Daytonian and received my Bachelor of Arts Degree with a minor in Aerospace Science from Wright State University.  After honorably serving my country as a United States Air Force Officer in the Strategic Air Command, I now proudly serve my community as an interior designer and ESOP owner of Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture Store.

During the past 22 years designing for Krispin’s, I have had the pleasure of decorating literally hundreds of homes with my customers investing over 8 million dollars in my designs!

"Love what you do and do what you love"

“Love what you do and do what you love”.

I love decorating! I cannot wait to get to work everyday to see whom I will meet and begin the journey of together creating a home interior they will cherish with family and friends while creating lifelong memories!  I know from personal experience the great joy of making our own home our favorite place to be for one another and to entertain!

I am humbled to have been awarded the prestigious Annual DeZian’ Award 14 times! It is presented for outstanding interior design projects and quality customer focused service.  A career highlight was being hired to decorate a Dayton Citirama Home.

My customers mean the world to me and I will go to great lengths to give my very best effort to each and every project!

I definitely believe no project is too small and no project is too big!

"Floral Arrangements" --another passion and hobby

The creative process seems to be a constant with me whether I am involved with a larger scale project to encompass furniture style and fabric selection and layout,  accessory and paint choices, custom rug and window treatment design to the smallest details of floral arranging, table linen embellishments and faux painting!

Constant attention to fashion trends, design theory, finishing techniques and furniture design are part of my daily routine!  Opening my mind and heart to absorb new information and  “see outside the box” is very inspiring!!!!

Connie participating in church

I also very much enjoy boating with the family, photograghy, tea parties with our daughter, horseback riding and tennis!  The Girl Scouts and school volunteer work continue to be great fun!  I love being active at St Francis of Assisi, and  in several ministries to include Centering Prayer, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, Scripture Breaking Open the Word, the children’s Religious Education Program participating in our Small Church Community.

Dreams really do come true.  I followed my dreams and they led me to have a loving family, a home of inspiration and two wonderful careers that make a positive impact in other’s lives.

I hope your dreams will come true, too!  Let’s get started!

Put Some VA VA Voom in Your Bedroom–by Pamela Cone

We know February is the time we normally think about love and romance, but actually we could always use a little heat in our lover’s nest.  You can heat up your bedroom by adding just the right accessories.  For instance, add a faux fur throw, talking about HOT! And if you want to really turn up the heat make it a fur bedspread.
“It is very important for the couple to love the bedroom selection they choose for their romantic space.

We are always getting those couples into our design center wanting us to design the perfect romantic retreat for them.  Couples spend a great amount of time in this space and it is important for it to be aesthetically appealing to them as well as functional. I sincerely believe good design adds to the quality of life.  To me this is what makes my job so special.  The positive impact I can have on someone’s everyday life.

“You can heat up your bedroom by adding just the right accessories!”

Although the beautiful white fairy tale bedroom pictured has been accented with red for Valentine’s Day, there are certain secrets we are willing to share with you on how to make your bedroom sizzle.

The Bedroom Ensemble:

It is very important for the couple to love the bedroom selection they choose for their romantic space. Whether it’s modern, soft contemporary or transitional, it should fit the customer’s personal taste.

Dressing the Bed: The cover must be inviting to both.  Most men will probably consent to whatever the wife wants, but his input is important even if he seems uninterested.

 Setting the Mood:

We have learned how color affects our moods.  Consider a color that will give you the sensation you are looking for—if you like sizzle, red is always good!  If you are going for a calm mood you should try soft hues of blue.

“Having a spot to unwind together away from the Twitter and Facebook is also high on the list of requirements couples are wanting and needing;

We often place a tray on the foot of the bed in our gallery for visual merchandising, but having one on hand for those nights when you want a little wine or a night cap or for those mornings when you want breakfast in bed is a wonderful idea.

Consider a color that will give you the sensation you are looking for—if you like sizzle, red is always good!

Wiggle Your Toes:

Hard wood all over the home has fast become the latest trend warm up your room with a beautifully design accent rug.  This feels good underneath your feet and gives the room that cozy atmosphere needed in a romantic haven.

Gorgeous Accent Chairs for an intimate space in your room

Snuggle Time:

Having a spot to unwind together away from the Twitter and Facebook is also high on the list of requirements couples are wanting and needing; therefore, a sitting area is essential in your at home couples retreat.  The items selected should not only compliment the bedroom ensemble but it should also be comfortable.  This will make the chair or chaise inviting while eliminating the habit of using the extra seating as a catch all for the week’s clothes.

If you have space a small occasional table can be added to hold beverages of even books for when you want to just have “quiet time.”

Make it Pretty:

Soft flowers, candles and accessories can make a room more inviting.  Adding soft touches shows you appreciate the precious time you have to spend together as a couple.

Your bedroom is just as important as any other space in your home.  Take time to select nice art which you both appreciate to accent the room.  And if you must have a television in the room find a beautiful armoire or credenza to hide or camouflage it until you need it.

Adding soft touches shows you appreciate the precious time you have to spend together as a couple.

Turn Off the Lights:

Nothing sets the mood for love like soft lighting.  Yes, we need task lighting but we also need a little mood lighting.  A torchiere lamp with dim setting feature will not only be attractive but will help set a sensual and romantic atmosphere.

Now the rest is up to you!

Designing My Wedding–by Candis Lindsey—Read about how Candis selected her gown and the rest of her exciting wedding plans!

It’s almost February and my wedding planning is in full swing! So far, here are the things that have been checked off my “To-Do” list:

Date is picked, church booked, dress purchased, bridal party chosen, guest list finalized, invitations ordered, rental company consulted, flower girl dress selected, decoration purchases started, slideshow started, catering booked, registry done, shower date selected, and marriage counseling underway!

Say Yes to the Dress

Most of you are probably more interested in hearing about my dress selection! I have to be honest and say I actually had my dress well before I was engaged! And it just so happened I chose the first dress I tried on, at the first place I looked on a shopping trip with just my mother and aunt! They say sometimes you just know…that happened to be the case on both my Fiancé and my dress! If you’re a fan of the show Say Yes to the Dress, you know that so many brides want the opinion of just about everyone they know! It happens to be the case in furniture as well! We get customers who bring in friends, family, and even their children to hear their opinions before they purchase. However, what it comes down to is the fact that YOU have to love it and YOU have to be comfortable! Without these two factors, chances are you will regret your decision! Let’s face it, if they don’t have a say in your decision and see it once the purchase is made, chances are they are going to love it! Those who love you will think you are beautiful on your wedding day regardless!

Surprisingly, everything is coming together very smoothly! I have found that it has been very beneficial to make lists and set deadlines and stick to  them! I created a wedding binder to help keep myself organized. It includes dividers separating sections like my To-Do lists, catering, our guest list, receipts, etc. that way I know exactly where everything is and eliminate any chance of confusion!

Between that and our families support, the process thus far has been so simple! We are very blessed to have the support of both of our families! Without their help and input, things would definitely not be as far along as they are! It has been so great to see our families come together and be just as excited for our special day as we are!

The question I pose to my readers is your opinion of using a videographer on your big day? I am a huge fan of photos so we have contemplated just having a photographer, but I have heard from several people that I may regret that decision in the long run. What are some of your opinions on the matter?

12 Time Management Tips to Maximize Your Time by Pamela Cone

Can you believe it is 2011 and not to mention January is almost over?

You can be in control of many things and possibly put a stop to some; but one thing you can’t stop is TIME!

Time waits for no one!

We can feel extremely overwhelmed with the amount of daily task we must complete and not to mention the numerous emails, telephone calls, text messages and tweets we must answer. Add family, friends, school or an 8-10 hour work day it’s no wonder we are overwhelmed. Our day can seem out of control even before it gets started.

When we don’t have a handle on our day it would appear we are like a dog chasing its tail—

Unproductive, Unaccomplished and Unfulfilled!

We all have been there but with effort we can make 2011 a Productive, Accomplished and Fulfilled Year!

12 Time Management Tips to Maximize Your Time

1. Start your day as earliest as possible. The old saying “the early bird catches the worm” is true. It’s harder to get motivated when you allow too much of the day to pass.

2. Prepare the night before. If you know you have an early or busy day prepare. This can easily be incorporated into your evening–even while you watch television. Lunches can be prepared in conjunction with dinner or even pack leftovers in those handy disposable Glad containers.

3. Keep a calendar. Whether it’s an electronic calendar, a large one you have on your desk, or just an old fashion day planner—you need to keep a calendar if you have a busy schedule.

Not only is it a good practice to keep a calendar it enables you to be conscientious of the amount of time it actually takes to complete task and even how much time it takes to attend any appointments you may have or even how long you want to allow for a scheduled meeting. In essence how much time you need/have to commit to any event during your day.

A calendar helps you avoid over extending yourself. It is easy to assume you have time, but unless you logistical plan for it, it really is up in the air. An unplanned day is essentially an unproductive day.

4. Plan for the unexpected. It is tempting to want to overload your day, especially if you are overwhelmed to begin with or overzealous, but be realistic about the amount of time you can commit to a task. When traveling plan for heavy traffic. Allow yourself extra time to arrive to work or scheduled appointments. This will reduce unnecessary stress and anxiety.

5. Don’t allow small task to eat away your time. Misplacing your car keys or your cell phone can eat away your time like that little Pac-man from the video game and before your know it you’re late and rushing.

The key is to have a designated place to keep your keys and cell phone. Make it a habit to place them there when you come in in the evening. Unless the phantom key and phone mover comes in the night they will still be there in the morning. Again this will not only save you time but relieve unnecessary stress and anxiety.

6. Don’t waste time. Just as you can’t stop time you can’t get it back either–once it’s gone it’s gone. In the day of social media, video games and 24 hour television it is easy to do. I’m not suggesting you not spend any time enjoying recreational activities just limit the amount of time you devote to them.

7. To Do List—I know this seems outdated, but it works. If you write down your daily task and look at your calendar to prepare for the next day this will not only keep you on task but it will give you a sense of accomplishment when you can check off each item as you go. At the end of the day when you check your list you can feel productive. And what you don’t have time to complete roll over to complete the next day. Make these items a priority for the next day and you won’t feel as if the task has lingered on.

8. Schedule time for task—if you are like most of us we have to juggle both home and career. If you set aside time to do task at home such as, laundry. I have a family of five. Each of us have designated laundry day this keeps the laundry room from becoming overloaded with dirty laundry. If your children are too small for this task maybe you can divide items into categories—Friday is sheets and towels day for us.

For reoccurring task i.e. physical exams, dental check-ups and car maintenance, schedule these appointments to coincide with a particular event or during a general time each year. For example, I plan my annual exams during my birthday month.

9. Touch it only once—we all like to play the paperwork shuffle, but if you make it a practice to touch it only once you will save yourself time. As soon as you receive and item file it if you need it for future reference—if not toss it!

10. Solicit support from professional resources—if you have projects i.e. home improvement, interior design, car repair or lawn care, it is perfectly acceptable to solicit the support of competent professionals. This removes these concerns from you allows you opportunity and time to give your attention elsewhere.

11. Navigate!– honestly I do not know how I made it before without a navigation system. Yes, I do, I was repeatedly lost! This has saved me time and embarrassment. When you know where you are going you feel in control. If you do not have a navigation system, MapQuest. For that matter, learn how to navigate on the internet.

The internet has long since become the number one source to retrieve information. Learn how to effectively use this tool. Yes, some may argue it’s a distraction; however, it’s a powerful source and can save time if we use it properly.

12. Take time for yourself and your family—you may say you don’t have time for yourself and your family may say you don’t have time for them—MAKE TIME! I know I told you, you can’t make time. How you make time is to take time. It is what it is, there is only 24 hours in the day, but during that 24 hours steal some time for you. Make you and your needs a priority. If you would give some time during the day to do the one thing that fuels you it will make a difference. For instance, if you love to read, go for walks or take relaxing bathes do it. For me it is my daily devotional time and creative writing—these activities fuel me!  When you take time to take care of you, you will have the necessary energy to give to your loved ones.

It seems silly to schedule time for your loved ones, but it works! My parents had a standing date every Saturday evening.  It was the high light of their week.  And we actually enjoyed watching them spend time with one another. I have incorporated this concept into my family life.  As often as we can my husband and I have “date night”.  Sunday’s is our designated family time.  Yes, we have meals together during the week, but we have grown to cherish this time together.  Take the time to enjoy time!

The more fulfilled you are the more productive and enjoyable your life will become

Time doesn’t wait for anyone, but how we use the time we are given is key to a successful life. With time management skills 2011 can be the year you learned how to take control of your time!

As always we would love feedback from you on this subject. Please feel free to leave us a comment or share with us how you have managed to control your time.

–Designer Candis Lindsey gets engaged!–

Javin and Candis

As everyone was celebrating the Holidays with family and friends, Designer Candis Lindsey and now fiancé, Javin Thomas had something more to celebrate! She said yes to the one question all girls dream of being asked! We interviewed her to get the full scoop!

Q: When did he ask the question and how exactly did he propose?

A:  December 17th was the date! We had planned for him to come over just for a low key night in after we both were off work. But once I left work, got home, and got out of my work clothes, I hadn’t heard from him. Over an hour later, he finally walked through the door, and to my surprise was dressed to the T! With him he had the cutest stuffed dog and tied to its sweater was the ring! As soon as I spotted it I was shocked and just started crying! He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! In the midst of my crying I managed to say, “Of course I will”! I  found out later that  him being late was just to throw me off a little!

The Ring "Bear-er"

 Q: How did you meet?

A: We actually went to High School and graduated together! He sat right behind me in Chemistry class. He says I annoyed him but really it was the opposite! After graduation, I went to college in Dayton and he went through basic training for the United States Army. It wasn’t until last February that we reconnected. Thank God for Facebook! It’s incredible how God works! December marked 10 months that we’ve been together and we are excited for many many years to come!

Q: What are the plans? Is the date set?

A: We are going to shoot for late spring of this year, maybe late May or early June. Time flies fast so it’s not that far away! We both are blessed with such supportive families and great friends willing to help plan our special day, not to mention that as a designer, I practically have it planned in my head already!

Q: You have to be excited! Anything else you’d like to share with us?

A: I am very anxious to start this memorable process and will be sharing the details of my journey to the altar in a monthly blog! You can keep up with my progress and offer up any tips you think might be helpful! I would love to hear any input I can get!

Congratulations to Candis and Javin! Did you or anyone you know get engaged over the holidays as well? If so, share how it happened with us!

Holiday Fashion Tips–by Candis Lindsey

Regardless of our attire, I think we can all agree that the most important thing to wear this season is a genuine holiday smile! You always have on your best look when your smile is in check! A radiant smile is always supported by confidence, and when you are comfortable in your apparel, naturally you will add some pep in your step! So here are some trends to help guide your style this winter!

Put your basics to use! Never underestimate the power of a white button up! Whether with ruffles or crisp and fitted, this simple article can be dressed up or down and even made interesting with brooches, a bold necklace, scarf, or even a cardigan!

Cardigans or structured jackets over a detailed or sequined camisole will be the spice for this season. Don’t be afraid of a little metallic. That edginess will be found on boots, belts, and also leather jackets! You will notice a huge comeback for the motorcycle style leather jackets. Not to mention leather leggings, this would make a great look for New Years Eve celebrations!

Leggings come in just about every color, and even in prints! If you’re bold, pair your favorite color or print under a neutral colored sweater dress for a fun and attention-getting ensemble! Mimic the color of your leggings in your jewelry to make it flow head to toe! With the bling and brightness, you will definitely make a statement!

This season’s major must-have is faux fur. From fur boots, coats, and even vests! A fur vest with a pair of wide leg jeans and a nice wedge heel will give you a successful Boho look! Not to mention it will keep you warm!

And never forget, you can’t lose with a good boot! This season is full of them, from ankle boots to knee highs! Over a pair of skinny jeans or with a high waist skirt, this look is weather appropriate and fashionably correct!

One last thing, don’t be scared of big, chunky, and BOLD jewelry this winter!

Full and colorful necklaces are everywhere and bangles are also a hot commodity.

Another way to achieve this look is to layer your existing accessories!

We know you are hot and stylish! We would love to hear your fashion suggestions.  Please leave a comment–we would love to hear from you.

Krispin’s Gives Back

Various charitable contributions and activities Krispin’s staff members have participated in this year

It’s wonderful to be able to realize how blessed you truly are and at the same time look around you and be moved with compassion for those who may be having a difficult time.

Loghan & Makena Kinsey--daughters of Krispin's designer AElainia Stryker--Thanksgiving Baskets--Bible Baptist

Our staff this year has made a point of being thankful.  And we are noticing there are many throughout the community and across the country who are having the same move of compassion within.

Individually and collectively our staff members have participated in various charities and instead of our annual gift exchange for our Christmas brunch we have elected to give to a family helping make their holiday season a little brighter.

“What has been even more special is the interest our children have shown in helping others.” What a wonderful lesson to share!”–Krispin’s Designer, AElainia Stryker

Erica Robinson--Thanksgiving Baskets--Christian Life Center

We have staff members who are connected directly or indirectly to military members and have offered support to our troops who are deployed during this holiday season and a way from their families.

“My huband and I volunteer for our the annual Thanksgiving basket event every year and we are always thankful that we can give support to those in our community who are in need.”–Erica Robinson

Candis Lindsey--Dayton Children's Hospital Book Drive

Dayton Children’s Hospital could always use volunteers and those willing to donate items to make a child’s stay at the hospital more comfortable.  Designer, Candis Lindsey donated books to the hospital this year to brighten some young patient’s day.

Candis–”I have truly enjoyed being able to give this year. I think it is truly important to give back.”

Many people think of contributing to a charity or acknowledging those organizations who assist those in need.  However, this is not the only time we have opportunity to support our community.  Our Office Manager, Jay Warrick, and his family have taken time and given effort to support a local Christian based organization in which his son Justin is actively involved in.  The organization is BOGG which stands for Because of God’s Grace has as one of their primary mission goals is to “Love Our City” by showing the love of Jesus Christ to the people in their community.  One of their many projects was painting the fence around the Mound in Miamisburg for the city.

Jay & Justin Warrick

“My family has been excited to hel support BOGG Ministries–Because of God’s Grace–this year.” Jay Warrick

Operation Christmas Child through the Samaritan Post organization was another charity some members of our staff decided to contribute to.  They made beautiful gift boxes for selected children that included personal items and toys.

Becky Grubb & Erica Robinson--Operation Christmas Child

“We are so pleased that our designers and staff wanted to contribute and give back to the community.  We wanted to be of some assistance to those in need and at the same time give back to the community that has been good to us over the years.”

AElainia Stryker & Pamela Cone--Krispin's recieved over 150 lbs of non-perishable food donations and 30 coats.

This year was the first time Krispin’s has sponsored a Food & Coat Drive.  The event was a tremendous success with  the support of our staff and our customers.  We would like to thank everyone in the community who stopped by our store and donated to this worthy cause.

Our troops need support from not only those veterans who are active duty, retired or who may have served but also from the community and country for whom they serve.

Pamela, one of our designers, husband recently retired and can recall the times in which he was deployed or on a remote assignment during the holiday season.  Once their family spent two consective Christmas’ apart.  She also added whenever the troops receive any support large or small it is a boost to their morale and it makes being seperated from their love ones a little easier.

Bonita, another one of our designers, has three children and all of them have elected to serve in the armed forces.  She says we are often focused on sending packages to the troops during Christmas or special holiday or directly after a conflict; however, she adds our troops need our support on a continual basis.  Her children have all echoed the sentiment that it is a wonderful boost to morale for them to receive a box from those who care about them.
Pamela Cone & Her Husband Steve

Pamela and her family have donated this year to the troops who are deployed within her husbands squadron.  And Bonita has prepared boxes for two of her children who deployed at this time as well as support troops in her daughter’s squadron at Wright Patterson AFB.

We would like to wish all of our wonderful customers Season’s Greetings, we certainly hope your holiday season is bright.

The joy of giving is contagious.  If you are or have participated in a charity event this season and would love to share your thoughts we would love to hear from you.    Please leave us a comment!

Thanksgiving Recipes & Memories from Krispin’s

Thanksgiving is a holiday that brings families together!  And during the holiday celebrations, not only is food being made but also memories.

As the staff at Krispin’s recalled some of out favorite memories, they ranged from dishes that were specially made for Thanksgiving, like Pamela’s mother’s Sweet Potato Pie or Bonita’s grandmother’s homemade Potato Salad to funny memories like Connie’s memory of her mother constantly trying to kick her father out of the kitchen and the one year that Pamela’s mother was sick with the flu and her father had to cook the turkey but forgot to remove the bag with the “innards” and they had a nice surprise when they went to carve the turkey.

My memory is a little simpler and always included traveling to see family.  Both of my Grandparents lived in Northern Ohio and were close enough to each other that we could split the holiday amongst both families.  So you know what that meant, double the food.  It was always a good feast but we were also glad that Thanksgiving only came once a year!

Now as far as favorite Thanksgiving dishes goes, we surveyed the Krispin’s crew and found that Candis, Connie and AElainia were all in agreement that Sweet Potato Casserole is by far the one holiday dish they look forward to every Thanksgiving.  Sweet Potatoes, brown sugar and pecans…who needs to even bother with dessert?  Here is a recipe we found that may sweeten up your Thanksgiving menu!

La Comedia’s Sweet Potato Soufflé

La Comedia’s Sweet Potato Soufflé

http://www.lacomedia.com/souffle_recipe.htm

  • 4 cups mashed sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 stick butter or margarine (melted)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Topping:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine (melted)
  • 1 cup pecans

Combine sweet potatoes, sugar, eggs, milk, salt, butter and vanilla and mix well.
Pour into buttered 8 x 8 or 9 x 13 dish.  8 x 8 recommended so that sweet potatoes are thicker than the brown sugar topping.

Crumble topping evenly over potato mixture. Bake at 350° for 35-45 minutes uncovered.

Jay and Pamela, on the other hand, look forward to the turkey stuffing.  How can you have a Thanksgiving meal without stuffing?  There are so many variations of stuffing, but here is a delicious recipe I found at www.allrecipes.com.

Designer Insight–The Psychology of Color–Orange

Orange.  This seems to be the perfect color to go over next with the definite fall weather we are experiencing.  Orange is considered to have the same effects on us as red, only in a less intense way.  It is a lively, energetic color that can have lots of intensity and bring lots of warmth to a space.  Also, like red, it tends to make items look like they advance into the space and jump out at you more so than many other colors.

Psychology of Color--Orange

Psychology of Color--Orange

In our culture orange is often associated with events such as Thanksgiving and autumn.  It is also often used to express affordability, such as in fast food (Taco Bell, Arby’s) or those horrible plastic orange chairs that every school cafeteria utilizes.  However, if a watered down orange color is used often it will look more along the lines of cheap and dull as opposed to a positive affordable feeling.

In interiors orange is often used in more informal spaces, such as dens, media rooms, and rec rooms.  It is often found in smaller amounts unless the orange has strong undertones, such as a pumpkin or curry color which has a very strong and obvious brown undertone.  Also an interesting side note is rarely do people refer to orange as “orange,” most often people will clarify saying something like, “clay, cognac, pumpkin, terra cotta, burnt orange, spice, etc.. etc..”.  Recently these descriptive colors have been very popular, offering up an alternative to your normal neutrals and blacks as starting point for many spaces.  The cognacs and pumpkins offer enough of a neutral base that additional colors can be added, while having something more interesting than your normal browns, khakis, and blacks as a base.

If you currently selecting a color or colors for your space we would love to hear from you.  We welcome your comments.

Psychology of Color–Blue

Blue. If you want to come home to an environment that is nothing but relaxing and calming, the correct shade of blue would be your color. Perhaps this is why blue is considered the color of choice to most Americans. Historically, blue has been considered a noble color.
A color that encourages feelings of trust and responsibility…how often have you seen business people wearing navy blue suits… It is also the number one color used for corporate identities.
In interiors blue has been shown to decrease blood pressure and pulse. It is thought that the color blue causes the brain to secrete tranquilizing chemicals, which help us relax and unwind. It is even suggested that most shades of blue result in our perception of time being extended, now only if perception was reality! As a result you have to be cautious when using blues in long hallways or in large rectangular spaces as it will have the tendency to make the space feel elongated and possibly even cool or bleak.

Psychology of Color--Blue

Now no color is perfect! Blue is considered the coolest color in the color spectrum. In intense hues blues can make a space feel gloomy and melancholy. Usually this type of reaction depends on the undertones of the blue. For instance the blue-grey can often remind one of an impending thunderstorm, and therefore spaces utilizing a similar palette can make one feel cold and oppressive.

Recently the most common use of blue has been a lighter pale blue, sometimes bordering on a blue-green paired with the rich chocolate colors ranging from milk to dark chocolate. Also as with many other colors the brighter, almost neon blues has found its place in interiors. Usually these electric colors are found in small doses in what is otherwise a very neutral palette.

Blue is truly a color that cannot be limited to a specific style as some colors are. Country blues, to electric blues and every color of blue in between can usually find some place in ones home. If you have decided any paint selections for your home or space based on the effects of the color we would love to hear from you or if you have found these articles useful in your design plans.  We welcome your comments!

Dayton Local Artist Celebrated–Dr. Willis “Bing” Davis

Dr. Willis "Bing" Davis

Mr. Willis “Bing” Davis, renowned African-American Artist, is being honored  this year with an exhibit now on display at the Dayton Art Institute and one coming soon to the University of Dayton.  His body of work entitled “Ancestral Spirit Dance”, which the artist has been consistently creating and working on since 1973, was reflective of his experiences and exposure to African art and tradition during his 10 trips to Africa.  However, the artistic impact of this artform did not begin with his visits.  His mother was a quilter; therefore, Mr. Davis was around fabric art all of his life.  This medium of art was passed down in the African-American culture.  Bing has captured this powerful art expression and talent in his art work.  He has also received inspiration from the African kente and mud cloth.

"Bing" Davis

"Ancestral Spirit Dance", Oil Pastel

The expressiveness of the design form is shown with his own interpretation as if it is designed to music.  The pieces have rhythm and move to their own melody and move on the large canvas like a dancer moving to the beat of those past and present.  I noticed one of his pieces on display at Sinclair Community College recently while attending a lecture; and from across the room I immediately knew it was Bings’ work–it moved me on the inside.

Keeping tradition alive is extremely important to the artist.  He sees a direct necessity for our generation to incorporate the traditional values he has studied in his travels.  The respect for history, our elders and tradition he feels seems to be becoming lost. The exhibition is entitled “Marking the Past/Shaping the Present: The Art of Willis “Bing” Davis, it is impossible not to understand and value the rich heritage of African-Americans.

Please take time to visit either exhibit.  The Dayton Art Institute will showcase Mr. Davis’ oil pastels while the university will have on display his photography, ceramics and masks. The exhibit at the DAI began November 6th and the exhibit at UD will not begin until Dec 7th.

I’m planning to view the exhibit Saturday with my family and I’m excited about viewing this portion of his body of work.

The artist studio is located at: 1135 West 3rd Street, Dayton, OH 45402-6813

We would love to hear your thoughts about the exhibition, the Dayton Art Institute or the artist himself.  We welcome your feedback.

A “Not So Tricky” Halloween: Tips for Safe Trick or Treating

It’s the time of year when little monsters, superheros, and princesses come to life! That’s right, trick or treating time! The one night of the year were it becomes acceptable to take candy from strangers, but don’t let your guard down; there are several precautions to take to make this thrilling evening a safe one! These tips will keep your kiddos happy and you stress free!

-When selecting costumes, make sure they are of appropriate length or purchase in time to alter before the big night out. Anything too long can trip them up and we don’t want any skinned knees! Put them in comfortable shoes and save their heels and oversized boots for costume parties and suggest they do the same with props as well. One less hazard and hassle, not to mention by the end of the evening, you could be the one holding both those uncomfortable shoes and those props!

-         Feed them a healthy meal before their venture out. This will not only provide them with the energy to walk an entire neighborhood, but also reduce their temptations to dig into their goodies immediately!

-         Make sure you plan a bathroom break before getting them all decked out. Some costumes are very complicated to remove for this task, so it’s better to think ahead!

-         Be prepared with either flashlights, light up shoes, or glow sticks for your child(ren) to wear. Someway to illuminate them so any passing vehicles can see them visibly.

-         Put in affect a “Walk not Run” rule. This makes them very easy to keep track of and also shows their manners when they aren’t cutting in front of others and running through yards. This brings me to my next tip; to keep them from the street, walk along side them on the outside of the sidewalk as they walk on the inside!

-         Start as early as possible! The earlier you start, the earlier you finish. Giving the youngsters some time to check out their treats and settle down at a decent hour.

-         Make certain that you inspect the candy before they dig in! Any partially wrapped candy or evidence of tamper should be thrown out.

For those in trick or treating communities, here are some ideas on how to protect these precious little ones!

           -         Keep your home well lit and inviting. Leaving your front porch light on is a good signal that you’ve got treats waiting!

-         Pick up any objects in your yard, sidewalk, or driveway that could create a hazard to the costumed kids as they creep to your front door.

-         Think of healthy goodie options such as crackers, raisins, popcorn, or fruit snacks. Even things not edible such as erasers, pencils, stickers, and temporary tattoos!

-         Also, be sure to secure away pets. Trick or treaters could easily scare your pets as much as they could scare the trick or treaters!

With these things in mind, you are bound to have a scare less trick or treating season!

What are some other ways you try to keep Beggars night safe? We would love to hear your suggestions.

Be Creative Design Your Pumpkin–Unique Pumpkin Carving Tips

Erica's husband and nephews with their prize winning pumpkins from the pumpkin patch!

To get started, you need a pumpkin. Where do you get a pumpkin? Well, it can be as simple as running out to the closest Walmart or grocery store and dig one out of their bins. But if you are feeling more adventurous, I highly recommend making an event out of it and taking your family to the closest Pumpkin Patch and hand pick your own pumpkins. Fulton Farms in Tipp City is probably one of the largest pumpkin patches in the Dayton area. You can either take one of their hayrides out to the patch and hand pick one of their pumpkins or they have pre-picked pumpkins that range in size sitting at their store front, which is convenient if you want to just make a quick trip.

Now that you have your pumpkin, you can start by choosing a pumpkin carving pattern or design and then draw your design on the pumpkin using a water-based marker. A water-based marker is nice because when you make a mistake you can erase it easily with a damp sponge. Once you have your design drawn, you can start by cutting out the top. A good tip for when you are cutting the top is to cut at an angle so that the outside diameter is larger than the inside. This prevents the top from falling into the pumpkin when it shrinks. Now comes the icky part! Scrape out all the guts of the pumpkin and set aside. If you like, you can salt and then bake the cleaned up pumpkin seeds in the oven for a yummy snack later! I found this recipe at Simple Recipes.

Some more good tips for you when you are carving is always use a sharp, straight edged knife; a dull blade is not as safe as you make think it is. Also, be sure to carve away from yourself and never hold the knife in a stabbing position. Consider giving smaller children stickers, tempera paint, or markers to decorate their own pumpkins if you are concerned about them using a knife.

When you start carving the facial features, start with the features closest to the center first and then work your way out. You can use an X-Acto knife or the tip of a potato peeler for fine detailed areas. When you are removing the carved portions, gently push them into or out of the pumpkin. If you accidently remove a section that you didn’t intend to remove, you can use toothpicks to pin it back in place.

Now it’s time to light ‘em up! Be sure that the candle is sitting in a flat spot on the bottom of the pumpkin. You may need to dig a little to create a flat spot but be sure not to dig too deep because the pumpkin may become more prone to rot. When placing the candle into the pumpkin, make sure that the flame is not too close to the top. To prolong the life of your now oh so scary pumpkin, you can seal in the moisture by coating all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil, or cover it with a damp towel when not on display. Also it would be best if you plan on carving no earlier than a day or two before you want them to be displayed whether it is for Trick or Treating or a Halloween party. And lastly, it is recommended to bring any porch pumpkin indoors on nights when the temperature is expected to drop below freezing.

That's one cool pumpkin!

Happy Carving!

Designer Insight–The Psychology of Color

The Psychology of Color

The Misconceptions of Yellow

Yellow! Yellow is one color that can be deceiving in interiors, especially paint.  Often times a yellow that looks cheery and inviting on a 1 inch by 3 inch paint swatch, will jump at you and make your eyes hurt when it is applied to a whole wall.

Yellow takes the most processing for our eyes to see.  Oftentimes people think of yellow as a positive, uplifting color, but in actuality it has been shown that children in yellow spaces tend to cry more (may want to rethink the yellow nursery) and people on medications like anti-depressants often require higher doses.  Some research also suggests that the color yellow supports our muscular efforts and ability to move (this color is often found in gyms) but people who have difficulty with motor loss, such as Parkinson’s disease, suffer even stronger symptoms when in a yellow space.  Also as our age increases, our ability to enjoy the color yellow decreases, or at the very least goes from enjoying truer yellows to more of the buttery or mustard yellows in muted tones.  So if you want a yellow wall, do it sooner instead of later, because later you may not like it!!

In interior spaces, yellow can make a space feel warm if it has orange undertones, but if it is an intense value of yellow it can feel abrasive and annoying.  Yellow is also a color that will project itself when reflected.  For example, you would not want to use an intense yellow is a bathroom where you put make up on, because it may make your complexion look more yellow.  So makeup that looks natural in that room may look more like clown makeup in most other rooms.  The most common mistake made with yellow is picking a yellow that is too intense, or saturated, with color.  I often tell my clients that when you find a yellow you love, especially when it comes to paint, go one shade lighter and use that.  It may look too pale or soft in a small form but it will intensify greatly when found in a larger form.

Currently the mustard yellows have been on a roll for quite awhile and just over this past spring, the bright, almost glowing, yellows have become popular in small amounts, especially in clothing.  Most likely this trend of intense yellows will appear in interiors at some point, but will be just that, a trend that will come and more than likely go fairly quickly.  So pick your placement and use of the color yellow carefully in order to end up with a cheery inviting atmosphere as opposed to a glaring, blinding one!

Designer Insight–The Psychology of Color

The Power of Red

Over the next several weeks we will look at individual colors and what effects they have been shown to have on us.

We will start with the first color the eye can recognize, and the best, of course, RED!  Red is usually considered the most dominant and strong color on the color wheel.  In the world of contemporary, a true red has become a staple and tends to be considered a classic color…in a contemporary way.

Red becomes important to us when we are infants, because it is the first color that infants can see.  It is also the color that your eye will pick up on when in a sea of other colors…hence the reasons stop signs are red and larger businesses require their staff to wear red shirts (examples being Meijers and Target) so you can pick them out from other customers.  Red has also been shown to increase our appetites, our blood pressures and tends to be a more aggressive color.  This color is also stimulating and so many experts will advise against using it in a room such as a bedroom where relaxing and calmness is valued.

From a design stand point red has many affects on a space.  Items placed in spaces being predominately red can tend to look thicker and heavier as well as appear longer.  Small touches of red, combined with the correct colors, often neutrals, can add interest and life to a space.  On the opposite side of the coin, mixing strong reds and greens, complimentary colors, can make an environment feel unpleasant and increase tension…interesting when you consider red and green are the colors most commonly associated with Christmas, a time when tension is the last thing needed!

This all being said on red, if you add a little bit of white, which is not a color- we will discuss that later, your result is drastically different.  Pink is a color that causes the body to produce nor epinephrine and cause the body to feel more relaxed and at peace.  Pink also tends to make people more aware of themselves.  Some also say that both men and women value things more when they are in a pink environment, for instance many make ups and anti wrinkle creams, etc etc are packaged in pink, or at the very least marketed with the use of a pink color and tend to cost much more than we would normally pay.  Pink in a design sense often carries a more feminine feel and is considered a happy, sweet color.  So whether you want a small pop of a bright red to make a large impact on a space or a pale pink nursery, red is guaranteed to make an impression and impact how we feel.

Dayton Falls into Fashion: Fall Trends in Dayton Stores

It is almost time to put away our shorts and sandals and switch out our bright neon’s and fun graphics for some warmer colors!  This year however, anticipate seeing some new color themes other than the typical reds and golds! Gray has conquered black for this season and has taken its place as the new neutral. But expect to see pops of jewel tones such as deep purple, midnight blue, emerald green, and turquoise in not only evening gowns and tops, but in accessories and eye makeup as well.

Also, the Khakis and olive greens are making their comeback this season alongside the military style. From the structured shouldered jackets with double breasted brass buttons and military appliqués to the very popular skinny cargo pant, be prepared to march in style.

To help you do so, pair your skirts or skinny jeans with a nice pair of lace up knee high boots or pumps. The lace up or bow detailing is a big feature this season and can spice up any look. Use these tips to do just that and keep warm on the chilly nights that are just around the corner!

All of these new looks are available in fine fashion boutiques like Forever 21, White House Black Market , Von Maur , Chico’s , Jule  , Banana Republic  , Victoria Secret  , Coldwater Creek  and all of these are located at The Green in Beavercreek, Ohio.

Dayton’s Krispin’s Furniture Labor Day favorites!

Even now, as I sit here and type, my mouth is watering from all of these yummy recipes I am about to share with you.

So let’s start the weekend off right with the all American Pulled Pork sandwich!  This recipe is not your traditional Pulled Pork recipe though.  There are two key ingredients in this recipe that make this so much more irresistible than your traditional Pulled Pork and those two are the liquid smoke flavoring and the Cajun seasoning.

And then for a side, one of my personal favorites is my mother-in-law’s Broccoli Salad recipe.  I have always loved Broccoli Salad but this recipe has the perfect amount of everything to help stand out amongst everyone else’s recipe.  It’s amazing how many times this recipe finds a place on the table.  It’s a tasty way to get your greens!

And every Labor Day needs a rich, creamy dessert.  The Butterfinger Delight is a recipe that was discovered by my Grandma and has since made a regular appearance on our Holiday menu.  I can’t tell you how many times I have taken this dessert to a carry-in and brought the dish home licked clean.

Hope these recipes help you with your Labor Day Menu!  Have a safe and relaxing holiday!

Interior Design Tips from Dayton’s Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture Designers–Silk Floral Arrangements–Friends or Foes?

Silk Florals

The silk plant has been around for years upon years.  And just as many other trends come and go people tend to believe the greenery phase has passed.  However, it is all in how you use these replicas of nature’s beauty? Placing a gorgeous floral as a centerpiece can not only add interest and life to a space, but also insert a “pop” of color.  Whether you are pulling color from an art piece or from an ajoining room, your floral can be the connecting piece to your design puzzle.  Even placing a nice ficus as the backdrop to a torchiere or an arc lamp can really soften the visual appearance of an area–as well as fill in empty space.  And did I mention they don’t need water?! In my opinion, I would definately call them friends!

The Classic Chair

I’m not talking about your dad’s recliner–even though the Eames chair is still a hot item.  I am talking about a chair that accents the room like a good pair of shoes.  One with curves, detail and lots of charm.  The accent chair or a pair of accent chairs have replaced the tired old love seat.

Interior Design Tips from Dayton’s Krispin’s Contemporary Designers–Benefits of Home Staging

There isn’t a day in which we fail to comment on the state of the economy and the current climate of the real estate and design industry.  The ripple effects can be felt throughout and how you deal with it can make all the difference.

Home owners and realtors looking to sell homes and make their listings stand out above the rest depend on the home not only having that curb appeal but a move in ready atmosphere as soon as the buyer walks through the door.

The Dayton Area Board of Realtors can offer some insight into the benefits of investing time and effort into this process as well as insight into buying or selling a home in today’s market.  Below I have listed eight reasons to stage your home.

1.) Staged Homes sell faster.
2.) Staged homes get higher offers
3.) Staged houses look better in the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) pictures; therefore, attracting more potential buyers to actually make the effort to view the home.
4.) Staged houses have an edge over competing properties, and the staging can often sway the final decision.
5.) Staged rooms appear larger to potential buyers
6.) The potential to sell good, un-needed furniture/accessories is present.
7.) A staged home makes a statement to potential buyers as to the pride and care that a seller has in their home.
8.) Non-staged homes linger on the market for an average of 175 days; whereas staged homes have an average of 35 days on the market.

Good Design Starts with a Plan

Good Design Starts with a Plan

You can have an aha moment or find a piece which offers you some form of inspiration; however, the execution of good design starts with a plan.  Design, as with anything has a foundation–the principles and elements of design.  A keen eye can always note when, where and how they are utilized in a project.

The desires and dreams for a particular space starts in the hearts and minds of the client and the design formulates when they are expressed to the designer and he or she executes them and make them into a reality.

Interior Design Tips from Dayton’s Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture Designers–Color Forecast For 2011

Restless Nomad--Sherwin-Williams

Color giant Sherwin-Williams has recently introduced their new color lines for 2011 and they are trendy and fresh. Has the color wheel expanded–no they have just discovered more innovative ways to manuever it. They are calling the new 39 color additions their Colormix 2011 collection, The new line will consist of four new color palettes: Purely Refined, Bold Invention, Restless Nomad and Gentle Medley.

Each palette has a distinct persona it represents. The Purely Refined collection is for your more sublte and classic style. While the Bold Invention is for your more free at heart and whimsical personality. The Restless Nomad appears to describe half of the populus currently and it offers a more neutral earthy feel with an exotic twist and could easily accent any atmosphere. And of course, Gentle Medley is like a breath of fresh spring air–full of hope and possiblities.

More Art

Art is an awesome wonder! It contributes so much to our lives. Everyone should have some form of art around them. Although everyone is not artistic, everyone can find some genre of art they appreciate and allow them to be able to express themselves. We should envelope ourselves in artistic creations so when the world around us is hectic we have the haven we have created to escape.

Interior Design Tips from Dayton’s Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture Designers–Splash of color

Many people are afraid to add color or are not exactly sure how to go about adding that “splash of color.” I always say, “every space has air, but atmosphere has color.” In other words, a splash of color can make all the difference.

If you are one who is afraid to commit to color then you should incorporate color into your color scheme through your accessories. You would start with a neutral palette–a monochromatic or an achromatic scale to give you a base and then build on top of it. The possibilities then become endless. Depending on whether or not your taste calls for a warm palette or you prefer cooler tones, you can dance all around the color wheel.

Think Outside the Box

How often have we heard this phrase? But it is so true in everything we do. We should think outside the box especially when it comes to design. Another saying is form follows function. Thinking outside the box can lead you to more than one function for just about anything.

For example, the new flat screen television is and has been the latest hot electronic must have item. Other than mounting it and making it the focal point of your space what do you do with the thing? Well, what about planing

Art Anyone?–The Purpose of Art

Krispin's offers what must furniture stores seem to forget--the finishing touches.

The purpose of art:

•As a means of enhancing experience and thought

•As a means of escape from, or consolation for, reality

•As a means of perceiving a higher, more perfect, or ideal reality

•As a source of pleasure or delight

•As a means of promoting cultural and historical community or continuity

•As therapeutic; i.e., as healing or purgative

•As a means of communication

Considering these facts it would seem art is a very important aspect in our lives. And it does more than hang on the wall or stand in a corner on a pedestal. It adds value!

Everyday we are searching to make our lives just a little better–to make our tomorrows better than our today. We can start by appreciating the value of art. It sounds so insignificant, but it’s true. When surrounded by beauty our level of thinking is elevated. In essence, we become cultured.

Based on this theory it also provides emotional and physical stimulation. Therefore, art is not just for the walls of the Dayton Art Institute or any other museum; they are for our homes also–for our enjoyment–adding to the quality of our lives.

Interior Design Tips from Dayton’s Krispin’s Contemporary Furniture Designers–Chandelier Trend

Chandeliers have become a new exciting trend in design. No longer reserved for over the dining room table, they are showing up everywhere from over the bed to over the bath tub and they range from overly ornate to overly outrageous.

Be bold, be daring! This trend is hot, stylish and not likely to be out next year–it’s worth the investment.

Coming Soon To Krispin’s Gallery

Contemporary furniture is not a new trend. The new classic contemporary is! It’s the old Hollywood glam look–sleek, stylish, sophisticated and almost seemless. It’s back and it’s beautiful. The new classic contemporary style is simple elegance with function in mind. This look is clean! The return of less is more.
